Economic opportunity begins when people have practical skills, local support, and room to shape their own futures. In Mizak, HAPI works alongside young people and community partners to build those opportunities close to home.

90 youth
HAPIGro has welcomed its final group of 30 participants, reaching its goal of 90 youth. Through rabbit raising, participants gain hands-on experience with animal care, planning, and the responsibilities of a small enterprise. The program gives young people a practical starting point for exploring how their skills can contribute to their households and community.
In 2027, the focus turns to deeper learning.
Rather than enrolling another group of 30, HAPI will spend more time with the current participants through follow-up training. The next phase will also introduce growing seedlings and planting them, expanding the practical skills participants can put to use.
COMMUNITY-LED FINANCE
Saving and lending together
HAPI also supports economic opportunity through its partnership with GCVF on MUSO community savings and lending groups. Members save together and gain access to loans through a locally managed process. This approach helps people pursue their own priorities and strengthens the community’s ability to direct its resources.
SKILLS AND WORK CLOSE TO HOME
Preparing for work—and creating it locally
Through HAPITech, young adults develop practical skills for changing work opportunities. HAPI also creates jobs locally and invests in professional training for its Haitian staff. Ultrasound training is one example: staff develop new clinical skills while families gain access to care close to home. Whenever practical, we work with local suppliers and service providers so more resources circulate within Mizak.
Building local strength over time
Lasting opportunity takes more than a single program. HAPI invests in Haitian leadership, staff development, practical training, and partnerships that put more decisions and resources in local hands. We also seek appropriate local contributions toward operating costs, while keeping services affordable within the local context. The aim is to strengthen local capacity and reduce reliance on outside funding over time.
